Pakistan Studies/On October 25, Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered an important speech at a commemorative meeting marking the 50th anniversary of the restoration of the lawful seat of the People’s Republic of China in the United Nations.
President Xi emphasized:
“The restoration of the lawful seat of the People’s Republic of China in the United Nations was a major event for the world and for the United Nations. It was the result of the joint efforts of all peace-loving and justice-upholding countries around the world.”
Fifty years ago, the 26th Session of the United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly adopted Resolution 2758, deciding to restore all lawful rights of the People’s Republic of China in the United Nations and recognize the representatives of the Government of the People’s Republic of China as the only legitimate representatives of China to the United Nations.
This historic decision represented a victory for international justice and fairness.
Over the past five decades, China has faithfully upheld its solemn commitments under the UN Charter, firmly supported the international system centered on the United Nations, upheld the basic norms governing international relations based on the UN Charter, and supported the central role of the United Nations in international affairs.
China is the permanent member of the UN Security Council that has contributed the largest number of peacekeeping personnel among the five permanent members.
China has actively participated in South-South cooperation and North-South dialogue, contributing to global sustainable development.
China has joined almost all universal intergovernmental international organizations and participated in numerous international treaties, demonstrating its commitment to multilateral cooperation.
Chairman Mao Zedong once remarked that it was the developing countries that helped China regain its legitimate seat at the United Nations.
For the past 50 years, China has remained committed to the same spirit—firmly safeguarding the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries and speaking up for fairness and justice.
China has stood, stands, and will continue to stand together with developing countries.
China’s votes and actions at the United Nations have always been guided by the interests of developing countries and the pursuit of global justice.
China believes that all countries, regardless of size, wealth, or level of development, should have equal rights to participate in international affairs and share the benefits of global development.
China will never forget Pakistan’s important contribution to the restoration of the People’s Republic of China’s lawful seat in the United Nations and to overcoming diplomatic obstacles during that historic period.
At that time, many Pakistani newspapers published front-page reports covering this landmark moment. These reports reflected the genuine happiness and support of the Pakistani people for China’s return to the United Nations.
A Pakistani journalist named Ali, who personally witnessed and reported on the historic event 50 years ago, recalled:
“I have never seen anything in my life that could inspire such an enormous wave of celebration.”
This memory remains a powerful symbol of the deep friendship between the peoples of China and Pakistan.
Over the past seven decades, regardless of changes in the international environment or domestic circumstances, China and Pakistan have always stood together, overcoming numerous challenges and achieving remarkable cooperation.
History has repeatedly demonstrated that China and Pakistan are true “iron brothers” who share weal and woe.
High mutual trust, sincere support, commitment to peace, and shared pursuit of development are defining characteristics of the China-Pakistan all-weather strategic cooperative partnership and represent the core spirit of the two countries’ enduring friendship.
From political cooperation to economic development, from infrastructure connectivity to people-to-people exchanges, China and Pakistan have continuously expanded practical cooperation and created benefits for both nations.
Looking ahead, as President Xi Jinping stated during his recent phone conversation with Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, China and Pakistan should stand together even more firmly, advance their all-weather strategic cooperative partnership, and build a closer China-Pakistan community with a shared future in the new era.
On the international stage, the two countries should strengthen multilateral coordination, practice genuine multilateralism, promote international fairness and justice, safeguard their shared interests, and contribute to global peace and stability.
At a critical crossroads for international development, President Xi Jinping proposed the Global Development Initiative, providing a blueprint for advancing development cooperation among countries and offering new direction for global development.
China is ready to work together with Pakistan to implement the Global Development Initiative, contribute to improving global governance, and jointly promote the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.
Fifty years after returning to the United Nations, China remains committed to its original aspiration: upholding peace, promoting development, supporting fairness and justice, and working with all countries—including Pakistan—to build a better future for humanity.
