Pakistan Studies/Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Pakistani Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on the evening of October 19, 2023. Prime Minister Kakar was in China to attend the Third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation.
The meeting highlighted the deep friendship, strategic partnership, and expanding practical cooperation between China and Pakistan, with both leaders expressing their commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations and promoting the high-quality development of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
President Xi Jinping noted that China and Pakistan are all-weather strategic cooperative partners and iron-clad friends.
He emphasized that successive Pakistani governments have actively supported and participated in Belt and Road cooperation. Over the past decade, the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor has achieved significant progress, strongly contributing to Pakistan’s economic and social development and becoming a landmark project under the Belt and Road Initiative.
President Xi stated that China is ready to work with Pakistan to carry forward their traditional friendship, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, and accelerate the building of a closer China-Pakistan community with a shared future in the new era.
President Xi highlighted that China appreciates Pakistan’s long-standing and firm support for China on issues concerning China’s core interests.
China, he said, will continue to support Pakistan in safeguarding its national sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, and respect Pakistan’s independent choice of a development path suited to its national conditions.
Noting that 2023 marks the 10th anniversary of the launch of CPEC, President Xi called on both sides to use this milestone as an opportunity to build an upgraded version of the corridor featuring:
He encouraged the two sides to expand cooperation in key areas including industrial parks, agriculture, mining, and renewable energy, while accelerating the implementation of major connectivity projects to achieve more practical outcomes.
President Xi also welcomed increased exports of high-quality Pakistani agricultural products to China and expressed hope that Pakistan would continue ensuring the safety and security of Chinese institutions, companies, and personnel in Pakistan.
Furthermore, President Xi called for stronger cooperation between the two countries within multilateral frameworks, including the United Nations and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, to promote regional solidarity, cooperation, and the legitimate interests of developing countries.
Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar congratulated China on the 10th anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative and praised the achievements made through international cooperation under the initiative.
He described President Xi Jinping’s keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the Third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation as insightful and forward-looking.
Prime Minister Kakar said that the eight major actions proposed by President Xi would further enhance global connectivity, contribute to a fairer and more balanced global governance system, and provide important opportunities for Pakistan and other countries to achieve greater development.
He noted that China’s successful experience in modernization has provided valuable inspiration and confidence for developing countries around the world.
According to Prime Minister Kakar, China’s vision of building a community with a shared future for mankind has brought hope and confidence to the international community.
Prime Minister Kakar reaffirmed Pakistan’s firm commitment to the one-China principle, stressing that supporting China on issues concerning its core interests represents a consensus across Pakistan’s political spectrum.
He stated that Pakistan will always remain a trustworthy and reliable friend of China and will never allow any force to undermine the longstanding friendship between the two countries.
Pakistan is committed to further deepening the all-weather strategic cooperative partnership with China and is willing to work closely with China to promote the high-quality development of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.
Prime Minister Kakar also emphasized that the Pakistani government would make every effort to ensure the safety, security, and legitimate interests of Chinese citizens and institutions in Pakistan.
The meeting between President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar reaffirmed the enduring strength of China-Pakistan friendship and outlined new opportunities for bilateral cooperation.
As CPEC enters a new phase of high-quality development, China and Pakistan will continue to focus on economic growth, connectivity, innovation, green development, and shared prosperity.
